About us

We are dedicated to creating seamless healthcare experiences.

We are a research and development group focused on building novel digital therapeutics for chronic disease management. We generate cutting-edge technology to power new models of care that bring peace of mind to patients and their families. Our work crosses the continuum of innovation between technology and healthcare, from ideation through to impact.

Our values.

  • Pushing boundaries in care

We conceive new models in care that can leverage technology to safely and seamlessly transition patients from hospital to home.

  • Building effective expert systems

We develop algorithm informed decision support tools for both patients and providers to provide guidance and comfort in their time of need.

  • Implementing within diverse environments

We draw from implementation science theory to map out bespoke pathways for integrating our systems and services into practice while maintaining continuity of care.

  • Creating measurable and meaningful value

We conduct both formative evaluations and summative trials to ensure that our therapeutics significantly improve outcomes for patients and stakeholders.

Together we work to discover and build more human digital therapeutics.

“Imagine a world in which people, regardless of who they are or where they live, use state-of-the-art information and communications technologies with enthusiasm, proficiency and confidence, to achieve the highest possible levels of health.”

— DR. ALEX JADAD, CENTRE FOUNDER

Our journey so far.

2002

Birth of the Centre

UHN’s Program in eHealth Innovation was founded in 1999 by Dr. Alex Jadad, who brought together an interdisciplinary team of “misfits”—including scientists, engineers, clinicians, patients, informaticians, and administrators—and invited them to imagine a vibrant future for health and medicine in the digital age. They obtained funding to create and build the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation, conceived as a flexible and adaptable setting for people to dream up new bold possibilities for change, and to access the state-of-the-art facilities, knowledge, methodologies, and interdisciplinary talent that are needed to make them happen.

2015

Growth of the Centre

With an original $6M investment in 2002, the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation has attracted more than $160M in external funding. Through its staff scientists, students, and associates, the Centre has published more than 500 peer-reviewed academic articles, and has been entirely self-sustaining for the last fifteen years, with products and services that are being used in more than 100 countries and impacting the care of patients globally.

2022

Centre for Digital Therapeutics

In 2022, we started our new chapter as the Centre for Digital Therapeutics. The notion of the digital therapeutic is perhaps where the promise of "eHealth Innovation" has always been: that interventions would be evidence-based expert systems, technologically advanced in providing decision support to both provider and patient, and capable of significantly improving health outcomes. These tenets continue to be our focus, even as the terms to describe our work continue to be redefined over time.

Our commitment to quality.

Digital therapeutics are increasingly being regulated as Software as a Medical Device due to their advanced decision support capabilities. We have committed to developing our own therapeutics under the ISO 13485 quality management system standard, a certification we have held since 2014. Adhering to this standard allows us to receive and maintain medical device clearance and approvals from regulatory bodies like Health Canada and the FDA.
