Wolfond Report 2023-2024
Our annual report on the Wolfond Chair in Digital Health, highlighting key CDTx projects pursued by our brilliant staff and students. This year’s projects include the KiT chatbot for young people moving to adult diabetes care, Caretown for patients and their family caregivers, and the Power over Pain for Youth portal with SickKids. The Ned cancer survivorship program enrolled 122 patients at four sites in Ontario, Alberta and Nova Scotia.

Karen Young, “Kevin J. Leonard Award” 2023 Recipient
Karen Young, an MSc candidate at IHPME, is the tenth recipient of the “Kevin J. Leonard Award”. Drawing on her family’s experience, Karen adapted UHN’s Ned cancer survivorship app so that prostate cancer survivors who speak English as an additional language can be active partners in their care.

CDTx Places First at the ICAIR Power Play Innovative Concept Pitch Competition
We are so proud of Camila Benmessaoud, Product Manager at CDTx, who represented us at the ICAIR 2023 Conference and presented on Caretown for the Power Play Innovative Concept Pitch. She came in first place and received $2,500 which will go entirely towards funding patient engagement initiatives in the lab.

Wolfond Report 2021-2022
Our annual report on the Wolfond Chair in Digital Health, highlighting key CDTx projects pursued by our brilliant staff and students. This was the year Medly expanded beyond UHN for the first time, to Sunnybrook and two Ontario Health Teams, and Medly and bant began supporting patients at Mamaway Wiidokdaadwin, an Indigenous-led primary care clinic. It also covers the KiT chatbot for young adults with type 1 diabetes and new features in breathe for asthma care.

“Alexa, launch Medly”: An Introduction to Medly Voice
Antonia Barbaric’s MASc thesis set out to make Medly more accessible by offering the heart failure program on a smart speaker as well as a smartphone. She designed a Medly voice app, tested it with eight patients at Toronto General Hospital, then followed 20 participants using it at home for four weeks. The oldest participants used it the most consistently.

University Health Network and Boehringer Ingelheim Canada Collaboration
UHN and Boehringer Ingelheim (Canada) Ltd. have partnered to bring UHN’s Medly program to more people living with heart failure, including those in smaller Ontario communities. Medly delivers specialized heart failure care at home, and research at UHN found it cut heart failure hospitalizations by 50%.

Paula Voorheis, “Kevin J. Leonard Award” 2022 Recipient
Paula Voorheis, a PhD candidate in Health Services Research at IHPME, is the ninth recipient of the “Kevin J. Leonard Award”. Her research looks at how patients take part in designing mobile health apps, and will produce a toolkit to help design teams build apps that better meet patients’ needs.

We are proud to announce our new chapter as the Centre for Digital Therapeutics. After 20 years as the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation, we are returning to our roots in R&D to develop digital therapeutics informed by lived experience and emerging theory, and moving our products through a new commercialization pipeline.
